'The Kasbah Route'
Ouarzazate Province and Atlas Mountains Area

This is the exoctic region where the Atlas Mountains and the desert area meet. Many of the great Mahgrebi dynasties of ancient Morocco came from this area, whose population is descended from a complex mixture of Arab, Berber, and Haratine peoples. The scenic canyons and gorges coming out of the Atlas range lead to oases and palmeries, places of habitation and agriculture (notably date palms, roses for essence, and grains). Kasbahs and ksour, old earthen fortifications, dot the palmeries, lending a distinct quality to the landscape.

Because of the vastness of this beautiful area, and the complexity of topography, attractions, and road conditions, a guide and car are highly recommended for an efficient and meaningful visit of several days. Many travelers, who have enjoyed the pleasures and sights of Marrakech or elsewhere in Morocco, find that the environs of Ouarzazate appeal to your heightened sense of natural beauty, curiosity for its rich cultural history, and love of the North Africa of legend and imagination. There are many available places to stay to fit any budget, some quite luxurious; and you find the warm welcome you come to know when you travel in Morocco.
